New Brexit Readiness Fund Launched for Businesses

A £10 million grant scheme has been unveiled by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, open to business organisations and trade associations around the UK to make sure that they’re fully prepared for Brexit.

The Business Readiness Fund will be used to support events, training and the production of advice packs, making sure that businesses of all sizes will be reassured that they’re fully ready for our departure from the EU.

Grant applications will be accepted up to 20th September, administered through a dedicated website.

Commenting on the news, director of external affairs at the Federation of Small Business Craig Beaumont said: “As an organisation representing 165,000 small firms and the self-employed in every local community across the UK, we welcome these funds that target small businesses. It is mission critical to the economy that they have the information they need to prepare for Brexit.”

Announcing the news, business secretary Andrea Leadsom said that business groups are now being given the tools they need to engage with non-members and companies of all sizes regarding help and advice with planning.

We’re helping bring a renaissance master to the people of Hull

RE:Group is backing a ground-breaking exhibition bringing the wonders of the Sistine Chapel to Hull. (see some of the stunning imagery at the end of this post)

“Michelangelo – A Different View” will enable people to admire and enjoy the work of the renaissance genius at close quarters within the magnificent surroundings of Hull Minster.

It is being staged at the Minster from October 8 to November 18, enabling visitors to view Michelangelo’s iconic artwork in a religious setting other than in the Vatican for the first time.

Hull Minster is one of only two UK venues to host the exhibition and the only one in the North of England, meaning it is sure to draw visitors from near and far.

With plans well advanced to enhance the exhibition with a wide-ranging programme of community engagement, Hull Minster has now announced the prestigious line-up of Hull-based partner businesses and RE:Group is very proud to one of them.

The corporate supporters are backing the Minster’s ambition to make the spectacular exhibition free to enter and accessible to the widest possible range of community groups.

They are led by Exhibition Patrons Arco, the UK’s leading safety company, and regeneration leader Wykeland Group, while Hull Trains has signed up as Exhibition Painting Partner and will support an open exhibition of work by members of the public inspired by the Sistine Chapel works.

The Sistine Chapel exhibition has toured major European cities, offering visitors a stunning up-close-and-personal experience of iconic images that draw four million people to the Sistine Chapel in Rome every year.

Michelangelo and his assistants laboured from 1508 to 1512 to depict Biblical scenes on the ceiling and walls of the Sistine Chapel, creating breath-taking frescoes that are regarded as some of the greatest works of art in the world.

The exhibition has been created by German company Exhibition 4 You (E4Y), which worked with the Vatican Museums to produce high resolution versions of photographs taken of the frescoes in the 1990s and transfer the images onto fabric webs to create superb reproductions of the elaborate paintings.

“Michelangelo – A Different View” allows visitors to view the works from a distance of only two metres, with no time constraints, meaning they will be able to appreciate fully their astonishing beauty and fine detail.

The exhibition showcases the entire set of Sistine Chapel works and includes the famous “Creation of Adam”, a depiction of God giving life to the first man, and a six metres square reproduction of “The Last Judgement”.

Securing the stunning exhibition is a major coup for Hull Minster, which has become an iconic, multi-use venue and community and cultural hub as a result of a transformational development project.

The exhibition also builds on Hull’s reputation as a cultural and visitor destination following the city’s year in the national and international spotlight as UK City of Culture 2017.

Bishop Frank White, Interim Minister of Hull Minster, said the support of so many leading companies would enable the church to make the exhibition free to enter and as accessible as possible to the whole community.

He added: “We’re delighted that key companies and significant employers in the local community are supporting this major exhibition taking place in the Minster. Their support is a huge encouragement to us.

“It’s also a sign of long-term relationship building with the institutions, organisations and companies of the city in order to achieve our shared objective to promote the wellbeing of the people of the city and the welcome we offer to visitors.”

Staff honoured at our Beverley Races annual do

RE:Group’s customers and staff had a great time at our annual visit to Beverley Races this summer – and the weather was glorious.

Along with the usual merriment ­– food, drinks and a fair few visits to the bookies – we used the opportunity to recognise the loyalty of our staff who have clocked up double digits with us. Sarah 10 years and Keith 15.

We’ve been visiting the races for a number of years now. Its location on the outskirts of Beverley is beautiful and there’s always a great atmosphere.

Kira’s quality role gets a boost

RE:Group’s lab manager, Kira, has successfully completed the Integrated Management System Internal Auditor Training Course.

Run by NQA, it trains for carrying out audits on integrated ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems.

Kira is a member of the company’s compliance team where she is responsible for quality systems. She took the course over two days in Birmingham and says that the knowledge she gained will assist with business improvement initiatives.

“It prompts you to ask questions and find ways of solving potential issues,” she says and adds that the course is useful because it is based on real life scenarios rather than a formal exam.

“My primary role is as manager of our UKAS accredited lab, but it makes sense to recruit people already working in the business into compliance roles as we understand how things work on the ground.”

Jacob and Chris are the other members of the compliance team in charge of the environment and health & safety respectively.

Qualification is bittersweet for Chris

RE:Group’s maintenance and safety manager Chris (pictured left), has passed his NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety with flying colours.

Following the 12-week course, Chris learned he missed gaining a distinction by a hair’s breadth.

“I should be celebrating as the result was very good, but to be one mark away from the top accolade is frustrating,” he says.

Chris says that course was very useful in reinforcing things that he already knew as well introducing him to new ideas, processes and regulations.

Chris is one of RE:Group’s new compliance team along with colleagues Kira and Jacob. Each takes on a different role, Chris’s being health and safety, with Kira on quality and Jacob responsible for the environment.

“We help each other out,” says Chris, “And the three of us are working towards becoming specialists in our respective areas.”

Next for Chris, who joined RE:Group in 2017, is the Integrated Management System Internal Auditor Training Course which was recently completed by Kira.

 

Getting arty with safety

We decided to ‘take a risk’ when it came to communicating a health and safety initiative. We employed graffiti artists to help get our message across as part of a wider campaign that we’ve recently been working on, which aims to ensure our employees stay safe while at work.
The artists interpreted the safety messages to create a head-turning wall which staff see when entering the site and that can be enjoyed by passing motorists as part of a larger art installation that has transformed the traditional industrial area of Hull into an open air gallery.
RE:Group managing director Paul Waine said: “We wanted to do something bold and memorable to encourage employees to engage with our push on safety, so we decided to broaden the usual methods of communication by creating something that would be worth talking about.”The graffiti wall forms part of an installation by Bankside Gallery, a group of artists who saw the potential of the area following a Banksy piece appearing on the nearby Scott Street Bridge which attracted publicity and thousands of tourists. The piece shows a boy holding a sword and shouting ‘Draw the Raised Bridge’, sparking speculation that it is a reference to the high proportion of residents in Hull voting to leave the EU.

RE:Group hosts a quiz night!

RE:Group hosted a quiz night for employees on 16th November at Goals, Hull. It proved very successful, as partners and children joined in the fun. Great food, drinks and music were enjoyed as teams battled it out for the prizes.

Congratulations to the winning team! This comprised Phil Evans, Sarah Atkinson, Mark Atkinson, Chloe James, Judith Wright and Catherine Ackroyd. All won gift vouchers which could be used in multiple shops. They were well received as it was just before Christmas! The losing team were awarded the classic wooden spoon – did you know that this is custom dating back to the 18th century?
