The diesel (gas oil) used in generators, if left standing for extended periods, deteriorates naturally into a toxic and highly unpleasant sludge, clogging fuel lines and preventing machinery working.
For any organisation where the maintenance of power is crucial – such as hospitals, data centres, police stations, warehouses and many others – a long outage is potentially a very serious problem if a back-up generator fails.
